Donovan Mitchell Trade Talk: Knicks on Top, But Brooklyn and Miami Lurk in the Shadows

Donnie Mitchell trade update. Mitchell currently plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he is considered a potential target for multiple teams.

Donovan Mitchell's name continues to swirl in the NBA trade rumor mill, with the New York Knicks once again emerging as the frontrunners for his acquisition. Recent odds from NBA Central place the Knicks at +200 to land the four-time All-Star, followed by the Miami Heat at +250.

However, the potential pairing of Mitchell with the Knicks' current star point guard Jalen Brunson has sparked mixed reactions among fans. While some are ecstatic about the idea of a dynamic backcourt duo, others remain skeptical, questioning whether it translates to championship contention.

Adding fuel to the fire are analysts like Bill Simmons, who believes the Brooklyn Nets and Miami Heat pose serious threats to the Knicks' pursuit. In a recent podcast, Simmons argued that "Miami and Brooklyn as my favorites [to land him]... This would be the test season (with the Cavs)."

Mitchell's current contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he averages 27.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, extends for two more years. His $33.1 million salary this season and $37 million player option for 2025-26 make a buyout highly unlikely. Therefore, a trade remains the only viable path for any team interested in acquiring him.
